Join the Primary Care in Pediatrics Pathway (PCP)
This is a longitudinal 3-year pathway for residents who are interested in a career in outpatient primary care.
Mission
We provide residents a bolstered experience in general pediatrics through mentorship, intensified continuity clinic exposure, individualized learning opportunities, and participation in quality improvement/scholarship with a primary care focus.
Goals
- Provide additional continuity clinic exposure to increase knowledge, confidence, and competence in general pediatrics
- Strive for residents to function with increased autonomy as training progresses
- Encourage patient ownership and continuity, both in and out of clinic
- Participate in quality improvement in the clinic setting
- Explore what it means to have a niche in general pediatrics
- Build connections and foster mentorship to help guide learning and provide career support
- Practice clinic time management skills to balance a full patient load and in-basket requests
- Reinforce communication skills with subspeciality care, therapies, social work, and other care team members
- Advance equity and inclusion in the clinic environment
- Reinforce habits to promote life-long learning
Resident Expectations
- Complete a minimum of 45 continuity clinics per year (or 27 additional clinics in total)
- Participate in quarterly evening meetings with rotating curriculum of PCP topics
- Work with chiefs to coordinate electives and flex opportunities targeted towards primary care
- Develop a primary care QI project
- Participate in a mentor-mentee relationship
- Participate in the Primary Care Elective in senior years of training
FAQs
Q: What if I am also interested in the Global Health Track or the PUBLISH Pathway?
A: You can apply to participate in any pathways/tracks in which you have interest. If there is a conflict between the two tracks (for example, meetings on the same night), we simply ask that you designate one track as your primary. We otherwise expect you to fully commit to participation.
Q: How is participation in this pathway different than the typical expectations for continuity clinic?
A: Residents in the PCP pathway complete more clinic sessions per year, scheduled evening educations sessions (topics related to primary care), dedicate their QI and academic projects to a primary-care related topic, and complete an intensive third year elective in clinic.
Q: Are the continuity clinic preceptors for this track different than those for the standard continuity clinic experience?
A: All of our continuity clinic preceptors are dedicated to providing a comprehensive experience so that all residents can graduate with skills to practice primary care. As PCP Pathway residents have different niche interests that may align with different preceptors, all clinic preceptors are eligible to precept a resident in the PCP Pathway.
