Every Child Everywhere
The Division of Global Pediatrics provides an academic home for pediatric faculty pursuing scholarly work in the field of global child health. The Wisconsin Idea calls us to ensure that education and research at the university is used to benefit communities beyond our campus. The work of the division embodies this mission in a unique form, bringing the resources and expertise of the University of Wisconsin to some of the most underserved children and families globally.
The majority of the world’s children, and the highest burden of disease in children, can be found in low- and middle-income settings. Each year, millions of children die of preventable illness before they reach their 5th birthday. Yet, with low cost and innovative interventions, in recent years, these numbers have fallen dramatically. The Division of Global Pediatrics aims to partner in meaningful ways with colleagues in these settings to collectively improve the health and well-being of children in ways that allow more children to not just survive, but to thrive.
In addition to focusing on the critical nature of challenges facing children in low- and middle-income settings, we feel passionately about caring for underserved populations in the U.S. and training pediatricians to effectively care for children and families most in need both in the U.S. and internationally. Today’s pediatricians care for a more diverse and interconnected population than ever before, with a quarter of U.S. children living in immigrant families and international air travel commonplace. A 2018 national study found that pediatricians with prior international experiences were more comfortable than their counterparts at caring for children in immigrant and refugee families and those traveling internationally. With exposure to settings where innovation and mindfulness of cost is essential, we firmly believe these pediatricians hold the keys to improving the care we provide for children in currently high-cost health care systems like those in the U.S.
