The National Institutes of Health has awarded James Gern, MD, professor in the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology and the vice chair of research in the Department of Pediatrics, a five-year, $5 million grant to establish a children’s allergy and asthma data hub known as the Children’s Allergy and Asthma Data Repository (CADRE). Co-investigators include Jomol Mathew, PhD, associate dean for informatics and information technology at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health; Daniel Jackson, MD, professor, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology; and Anne Marie Singh, MD, professor and interim chief, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology. CADRE will pool and harmonize data from 13 allergy and asthma birth cohort studies in the US to share with the scientific community. Identifying prenatal and early-life risk factors is crucial for developing strategies to prevent childhood asthma. While individual birth cohort studies have identified several asthma-related genetic, personal, and environmental risk factors, these studies are limited by low diversity and modest sample sizes. CADRE will initially include information from more than 9,000 children and will partner with additional domestic and international studies to build the database and promote the broad use of this information. The award began on August 6 of this year and will continue through May 2029.
