The National Institute of Mental Health awarded Ellen Wald, MD, professor, Division of Infectious Diseases, with an R21 in the amount of $441,016 for her project, “Feasibility of a Study to Determine the Incidence, Spectrum, Course and Outcome of Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) in a Diverse Group of Children.” The goal of the research is to provide a proof-of-concept of the feasibility of a proposal to examine PANS and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Group A Streptococcus (PANDAS) in a geographically and economically diverse population of children. Participants will be identified in near real time via electronic medical records and followed prospectively to describe the breadth of clinical manifestations, their course, and the ultimate outcomes. Key personnel on the award include Dominic Co, MD, PhD, associate professor, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology; William Taft, MD, associate professor, Department of Psychiatry; and Jens Eickhoff, PhD, distinguished scientist III, Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics. This two-year grant began in December 2024 and will continue through November 2026.
