Krisjon Olson wins Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research’s Fall Competition for HEART-WISE research

Krisjon OlsonKrisjon Olson, PhD, assistant professor, Division of Cardiology, was a recent recipient of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research’s Fall Competition. An award in the amount of $65,481 will support her project, “Insuring Improved Healthcare Transition for Wisconsin’s Survivors of Congenital Heart Disease (HEART-WISE).” Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects 1% of the population and accounts for 10% of health care costs in the U.S. Many CHD patients face insurance barriers during their transition from pediatric to adult care, leading to interrupted care and adverse health outcomes, particularly among those with disabilities. The HEART-WISE project builds on community-based research findings to assess Wisconsin Medicaid enrollment patterns, health care utilization, and the impact of policy on CHD survivors. By analyzing Medicaid claims data and developing provider- and patient-focused education interventions, Olson’s team seeks to address disparities in insurance continuity and health care access. Findings will guide the development of an accessible care model, including insurance enrollment education, to improve outcomes for CHD survivors, particularly those with disabilities, ensuring a smoother transition to adult care. The project will begin on July 1, 2025, and continue through June 30, 2026.
