Professional Activities

Dr. Ellen Wald is tenured professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She served as chair of the department from 2006 to 2022.  Wald enjoys mentoring medical learners through demonstrating superb patient-centered care and a commitment to continuing clinical education. Throughout her career, she has received more than 20 awards for her teaching and meticulous clinical care. In 2021, Wald was awarded the prestigious University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Folkert Belzer Award in recognition of her profound impact on the institution, department, and the patients treated within them.

Clinical Interests

Wald is a pediatric infectious disease specialist with expertise in the microbiology, diagnosis, and treatment of sinusitis and other infections of the respiratory tract.   

Research Interests

Wald is recognized internationally for her contributions to improving the care for and treatment of pediatric sinusitis. The Wald and DeMuri Research Group focuses on improving the treatment of respiratory infections such as sinusitis, otitis media, and pharyngitis. Current research projects investigate nasal cytokine responses in children with viral URI, transcriptomic differences within group A streptococci (GAS) in humans as a means to differentiate acute infections from carriage, and the use of anterior mouth swabs in the diagnosis of respiratory infections.
