We are proud to offer fellows the option to pursue concentrations within the fellowship program that are tailored to their interests and career goals. Current pathways include the following:
Complex Care
The Complex Care Pathway provides fellows with comprehensive clinical, scholarly, and professional development experiences focused on caring for children with medical complexity. Fellows work alongside a multidisciplinary pediatric complex care team across inpatient and outpatient settings, gaining exposure to pediatric rehabilitation, neurology, palliative care, device management, multidisciplinary specialty clinics, and community-based resources that support children and families. Fellows complete a mentored scholarly project in research, advocacy, education, or quality improvement and engage with national complex care organizations and conferences to expand their professional network. Ongoing educational opportunities include the Family LENS curriculum, Complex Care Journal Club Podcast, LEND training, and regular interdisciplinary team meetings, providing a robust foundation for future leaders in pediatric complex care.
Sedation
The Sedation Pathway provides fellows with comprehensive training in the safe and effective delivery of pediatric procedural sedation. Through a combination of self-directed learning, clinical experience, and hands-on skills development, fellows gain expertise in patient selection, pre-sedation assessment, ASA classification, sedation pharmacology, airway physiology, and monitoring requirements across the sedation continuum. Fellows develop proficiency in recognizing and managing sedation-related complications, including airway obstruction, laryngospasm, and apnea, while building competency in essential airway management techniques such as oxygen administration, bag-mask ventilation, CPAP, and airway adjunct placement. This pathway prepares fellows to provide high-quality, evidence-based sedation care for a variety of pediatric patients and procedures. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to complete a nitrous oxide administration training course.
Clinical Informatics
The Clinical Informatics Pathway provides fellows with hands-on experience in healthcare technology, data analytics, and clinical systems improvement. Fellows have the opportunity to earn Epic’s Physician Builder Certification through in-person training at Epic headquarters, gaining the skills and permissions to design and optimize electronic health record tools and workflows. Additional experiences may include participation in informatics electives, clinical informatics conferences, Epic advanced training programs, and institutional informatics meetings. Fellows also complete a mentored scholarly project focused on clinical informatics, quality improvement, data analytics, or digital health, preparing them to leverage technology to improve patient care, healthcare delivery, and system performance.
Global Health
The Global Health Pathway prepares fellows to care for children in diverse healthcare settings through a longitudinal curriculum focused on global child health, advocacy, health equity, and sustainable partnerships. Fellows engage in multidisciplinary educational experiences, mentorship, and local and international opportunities that explore the social, cultural, and structural factors influencing child health. Through participation in global health coursework, community-based advocacy projects, and elective experiences, fellows develop the knowledge and skills needed to address health disparities and improve outcomes for children both locally and globally. Fellows also benefit from the extensive resources and interdisciplinary collaborations available through the University of Wisconsin–Madison Global Health Institute and its national and international partnerships.
