NIH selects Benjamin Spector for K12 Grant to study kidney transplantation rejection

Dr. Benjamin SpectorThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) Multidisciplinary K12 Urologic Research (KURe) Career Development Program awarded Benjamin Spector, MD, MS, assistant professor, Division of Nephrology, a NIH K12 grant for his project, “Identification of novel biomarkers and pathogenesis of kidney transplant rejection using cell-free DNA fragmentation and DNA methylation patterns.” This two-year grant in the amount of approximately $120,000 per year began in January of this year and will continue through July 2028. The goal of this project is to define longitudinal epigenetic changes associated with kidney transplant survival. As a transplanted kidney typically only survives 10 to 20 years, Spector hopes this research will ultimately lead to interventions to lengthen survival of the transplanted kidney and improve outcomes for kidney transplant patients.
