UW Health announces Kristin Shadman as new medical director of quality and safety for the Department of Pediatrics

A leader in quality and safety as well as pediatric care and medical education, Kristin Shadman, MD, professor, Division of Hospital Medicine and Complex Care, will serve as the medical director of quality and safety for the Department of Pediatrics. UW Health announced her new role in August. Shadman’s commitment to quality and safety is evident from the additional training she has completed in the field, including the Quality and Safety Educators Academy from the Society of Hospital Medicine and the Advanced Improvement Methods course at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. In addition to past quality leadership roles with the American Academy of Pediatrics, she serves on the Academic Pediatric Association Quality and Safety Innovation Scholars Executive Committee, which focuses on developing pediatric leaders in quality and safety. Within the Division of Hospital Medicine and Complex Care, Shadman serves as medical director and director of quality. She is also the inaugural director of QI scholarship for the Department of Pediatrics.

In this new role, Shadman will serve as the departmental liaison to the UW Health Medical Directors of Quality and Safety. She will work closely with Nina Menda, MD, associate professor, Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery, and medical director of quality and safety for UW Health Kids, to shape the strategic priorities of health quality and safety for children. Early priorities include enhancing the collaboration between the department and health system in quality initiatives, decreasing barriers to data acquisition and analysis, clarifying the approval process for quality registry participation, and building a departmental community of quality-interested staff and faculty.
