Last month, community members, professional colleagues, and supporters gathered at the Monona Terrace to toast 40 emerging leaders from Wisconsin’s Capital Region — In Business magazine’s latest 40 Under 40 class. Among the honorees was Jasmine Zapata, MD, MPH, assistant professor, Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery. In 2016, she founded Motivational M.D. Enterprises, a company committed to empowerment, economic advancement, and storytelling as a vehicle for change. Zapata is also the author of “Beyond Beautiful: A Girl’s Guide to Unlocking the Power of Inner Beauty, Self Esteem, Resilience and Courage,” and she has helped over 300 aspiring authors publish and sell their books. She also serves as the chief medical officer and state epidemiologist for community health within the Bureau of Community Health Promotion at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the first woman and person of color in that role.
