Title: Health Equity Rounds: Race in Clinical Algorithms – Breathing Deeper into Lung Function

Session Overview:

Until recently, standardized tools for clinical decision-making have utilized race-specific algorithms due to the widespread belief in biological differences between races. It is now recognized that many of the so-called biological effects of race are, in fact, the effects of environmental exposures and social and economic deprivation as a result of decades of structural inequities and racism.

Pulmonary function testing (PFT) in children plays an important role in evaluating a child with known or suspected respiratory disease. PFTs are one example of a race-based clinical algorithm. This session will critically appraise the role of race in pulmonary function testing and examine how to interpret spirometry in a race-conscious fashion.
