Title: Supporting Children, Families, and Professionals in the Aftermath of Crisis

Session Overview: Crises have the potential to cause short- and long-term effects on the psychological functioning, emotional adjustment, health, and developmental trajectory of children. This session with provide practical suggestions on how to identify common adjustment difficulties in children in the aftermath of a crisis and to promote effective coping strategies.  The session will also highlight the differences between trauma and loss and the implications for how to support children and families in the aftermath of both.  Professionals residing and/or working within a community impacted by a crisis event often experience similar impacts as the families they support throughout the recovery and renewal phases, underscoring the need for professional self-care. The presenter, David J Schonfeld, MD, established and directs the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (www.schoolcrisiscenter.org).  He will draw on over 30 years’ experience in pediatric bereavement and school and community crisis response to provide examples and answer questions from participants.

Speaker: David J Schonfeld, MD, FAAP, director, National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, USC Keck School of Medicine
