Title: The TEN-4 on Child Abuse – There’s an App for That
Session Overview/Dr. Pierce’s Pearls:
- Injuries tell you the story – and skin, bones, brain, and biology are some of the loudest “talkers” – science and research help us learn the language
- Less than 80% of children with abusive injures present with a history of trauma – most present with a complaint related to the medical manifestations of injuries so a broad differential is critical when encountering common medical complaints.
- Be the history taker not the history teacher: When an injury history is provided – 2 simple questions help differentiate abuse from accidental injury: what happened? Then what happened?
- The LCAST Child abuse injury plausibility APP is an evidence-based screening tool with evidence-based data re bruising and brain injury (with future updates to include bone and biology!) and likelihood of abuse, along with a guide of pertinent history of injury questions. In addition, the APP also has PubMed links to other related articles and AAP guidelines for next steps in abuse evaluations.
