In response to COVID-19, the Department of Pediatrics’ annual Research Week will offer alternative programming to spotlight the scholarly work from its residents, fellows, faculty and staff. Through a mix of livestreamed lectures and interactive sessions, Research Week’s celebration of scholarship will be virtually available to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health community and anyone interested in the latest advances in pediatric research.
Activities for the week include small group sessions with faculty and trainees to discuss research careers and how to turn an idea into a research project, the distinguished Gerard B. Odell Lecture, a Faculty Research Forum, platform presentations, and an online poster session featuring the research of residents, fellows, faculty and staff. New this year, up to 10 hours of continuing medical education (CME) credit can be earned by attending the lectures.

Odell, MD, who directed the Department of Pediatrics’ Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition from 1976 through 1991. Dr. Odell was internationally recognized for his research in the field of neonatal jaundice and bilirubin metabolism, and was highly influential in improving the quality of care for newborns and children with liver disease. The Gerard B. Odell Research Award is given to an assistant or associate professor of pediatrics in recognition of outstanding research accomplishments and demonstrated potential for future contributions. Dr. Pelin Cengiz (Associate Professor (CHS), Division of Critical Care) will be presented with this year’s Gerard B. Odell Research Award. Congratulations to Christine Sorenson, PhD, who was recently awarded an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Eye Institute (NIH/NEI) for her project titled “VEGF Antagonism and Resistance to Neovascular AMD.” This four-year, $1.5 million award will allow Dr. Sorenson, along with Co-Investigators from the UW Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, Barbara Blodi, MD and Nader Sheibani, PhD, to continue their research into vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), the key factor that drives neovascularization associated with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), with anti-VEGF therapy being the standard treatment. The innovation of this proposal lies in their ability to determine whether genetic variation in Bim impacts the efficacy of anti-VEGF, the primary treatment modality for nAMD.


Ryan Coller, MD, MPH, Principal Investigator, and Nicole Werner, PhD (Industrial & Systems Engineering), Co-PI, and Mary Ehlenbach, MD, Collaborator, were recently awarded a one-year, $75,000 grant from the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, (ICTR), Clinical & Community Outcomes Research Pilot (CCOR) for their project entitled, “Participatory Design of a Learning Health System to Improve Medically Complex Enteral Tube Care.” In this project, the team proposes to develop a caregiver learning health system (LHS) to support in-home caregiving to improve care of children with medical complexity and family health, using enteral care as a model case. An LHS is an innovative strategy that links systematically collected real-world data with evidence to inform care and improve outcomes. Our caregiver LHS, @HOMEv1, uses caregiver-generated data from a mobile application on smartphones or tablets to shape future caregiving. We hypothesize that @HOMEv1 will improve enteral tube processes and outcomes by bolstering caregiver self-efficacy, and increasing the number and breadth of evidence-informed strategies at the caregiver’s disposal. Higher self-efficacy will lead directly to lower caregiver stress and fewer enteral tube-related hospitalizations and ED visits.

Christine Sorenson, PhD, Principal Investigator, has been awarded a 1-year, $50,000 Translational Basic & Clinical Pilot Award from the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR), for her project entitled “BIM Polymorphisms Impact on anti-VEGF Therapy for Neovascular AMD”. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a progressive and degenerative disease that affects individuals typically over the age of 60 leading to vision loss. The proangiogenic activity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) contributes to the pathogenesis of neovascular AMD (nAMD) which is why anti-VEGF therapy is the standard of care for these patients. Dr. Sorenson, along with collaborators Drs. Nader Sheibani and Barbara Blodi of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, aim to determine whether genetic variation in BIM expression (BIM is a pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family member), contributes to anti-VEGF therapy failure in non-responsive nAMD patients.

Congratulations to Christine Sorenson, PhD, who was recently awarded a Vilas Life Cycle Professorship, supported by the Women in Science & Engineering Leadership Institute (WISELI) and the UW Office of the Provost. This 16-month award, in the amount of $40,000, supports her research entitled, “Bim, Inflammation and Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration.” Inflammation plays a causative role in the pathogenesis of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), a major vision threatening disease. Unfortunately, the key regulatory events involved and how the recruitment, activation and clearance of macrophages are controlled during the pathogenesis of nAMD is not understood. This funding will allow us to determine how Bim, a cell death initiating Bcl-2 family member, modulates inflammation during nAMD, and whether its loss of expression contributes to standard of care therapeutic failure in patients.
