Save the Date: Virtual Pediatrics Research Week Begins 5/26/20

In response to COVID-19, the Department of Pediatrics’ annual Research Week will offer alternative programming to spotlight the scholarly work from its residents, fellows, faculty and staff. Through a mix of livestreamed lectures and interactive sessions, Research Week’s celebration of scholarship will be virtually available to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health community and anyone interested in the latest advances in pediatric research.

Activities for the week include small group sessions with faculty and trainees to discuss research careers and how to turn an idea into a research project, the distinguished Gerard B. Odell Lecture, a Faculty Research Forum, platform presentations, and an online poster session featuring the research of residents, fellows, faculty and staff. New this year, up to 10 hours of continuing medical education (CME) credit can be earned by attending the lectures.

A brief outline of the week’s activities is below.

Tuesday, May 26, 2020
Opening Lecture: What Everyone Needs to Know About Quality Improvement, Informatics and Turning an Idea into a Project

The Odell Lecture is named for Gerard B. Odell, MD, who directed the Department of Pediatrics’ Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition from 1976 through 1991. Dr. Odell was internationally recognized for his research in the field of neonatal jaundice and bilirubin metabolism, and was highly influential in improving the quality of care for newborns and children with liver disease.

The Gerard B. Odell Research Award is given to an assistant or associate professor of pediatrics in recognition of outstanding research accomplishments and demonstrated potential for future contributions. Dr. Pelin Cengiz (Associate Professor (CHS), Division of Critical Care) will be presented with this year’s Gerard B. Odell Research Award.

8:55am-12:00pm | Livestreamed via Blackboard Collaborate
Up to 3 CME Credits Available*
This session will feature ten research vignettes from Department of Pediatrics faculty who were asked to describe one of their favorite projects. Each presentation will last ten minutes and include an additional five minutes for questions and open discussion. The session will be a great opportunity to learn about exciting new developments in child health research.  More details on each presentation will be available on our website.
Academic Research Town Hall
12:00-12:30pm | Livestreamed via Blackboard Collaborate
Drs. Bikash Pattnaik and James Gern will lead a discussion on mechanisms to promote collaborative research.

Anna Hoefges
Anna Hoefges
Anna Hoefges

Anna Hoefges, graduate student in the lab of Paul Sondel, MD, PhD, was recently awarded a Trainee Abstract Award from the American Association of Immunologists (AAI). Her abstract, entitled, “Thousands of new antigens are recognized in mice via endogenous antibodies after being cured of a B78 melanoma via immunotherapy” was selected for oral presentation at IMMUNOLOGY 2020(tm). This project will identify targets that mice develop antibodies against, either due to having a cancer or due to receiving a specified immunotherapy regimen. This award includes up to $750 in travel reimbursement to attend the AAI Annual Meeting held May 8-12, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Congratulations!

Students & Faculty Mentors Selected for the Shapiro Summer Research Program

The following students and their mentors were recently awarded Shapiro Summer Research Awards. The Shapiro Summer Research Program provides opportunities for first-year medical students to participate in eight- to 12-week summer research projects with UW-Madison faculty members. First-year medical students apply at the beginning of each calendar year with basic science, clinical, translational, public health, or health systems projects. Funding for the program comes from the Herman and Gwendolyn Shapiro Foundation, with additional support from SMPH departments, centers and investigator grants.

Congratulations to the following faculty and students:

Paul Sondel, MD, PhD

Paul Sondel, MD, PhD
Paul Sondel, MD, PhD

The Laboratory of Paul Sondel, MD, PhD, will soon begin a collaboration with Invenra, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of multispecific antibodies for immuno-oncology, and Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). This collaboration, planned for two years and worth an estimated $400,000 in direct costs to Dr. Sondel’s lab, will foster discovery and development of a bispecific antibody therapeutic for the treatment of neuroblastoma. The idea for this collaboration emerged from a previous collaboration between Invenra and Dr. Sondel. Alex Pieper, Graduate Student in Sondel Laboratory, Appointed to ICTR TL1 Program

Congratulations to Alex Pieper, graduate student in the Sondel Laboratory, who was recently appointed to the TL1 program supported by the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR). This award provides an annual stipend, tuition, insurance, fees, and a travel allowance in support of his project, “Influence of Treatment Regimen and Tumor Type on Concomitant Immune Tolerance.” Alex’s research, under the direction of mentor Paul Sondel, MD, PhD, will utilize two separate in situ cancer vaccines to investigate the mechanisms by which anti-tumor responses can be induced at multiples sites of disease in preclinical murine models.
