Medical Student Education
Highlights
- The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH) launched the new ForWard curriculum in the Fall 2016 semester. This first cohort of students entered clinical rotations in the Spring 2018 semester.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Approximately 134 primary care physicians, nurses, and physician assistants attended the 2018 Seminars in Pediatrics to learn about current trends in pediatric research and clinical practice. Department of Pediatrics faculty members Kristin Shadman, MD, and Brittany Allen, MD, served as course directors.
Keynote speaker Julie Linton, MD, FAAP—a clinical associate professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville and Children’s Hospital of Greenville Health System, and co-chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Immigrant Health Special Interest Group—gave two talks on health screening and advocacy for children in immigrant families.
The event also offered one pre-conference opportunity: “2019 Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes Self-Assessment,” a facilitated American Board of Pediatrics Part 2 Activity.
- The department hosted the first annual Pediatric Critical Care Regional Conference, which was co-sponsored by American Family Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Gundersen Health System, Marshfield Children’s Hospital and St. Vincent Children’s Hospital. Directed by Scott Hagen, MD, this conference is brought in 183 physicians, trainees, pharmacists, nurses and respiratory therapists.
- In collaboration with the Division of Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care, co-chairs Awni Al-Subu, MD, and Eileen Cowan, MD, hosted the Pediatric Critical Care and Neonatal Medicine Point of Care Ultrasound Taught by experts from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 22 of our providers and fellows took part in this interdisciplinary hands-on simulation course.
- Hosted this year by the Waisman Center and the Department of Pediatrics, 105 clinicians, scientists, midwives, administrators and Plain community members came together to discuss the clinical care and research of genetic conditions that affect the Plain Community at the 6th Annual Translational Medicine in Plain Populations Conference.
- The department spotlighted its research accomplishments at its 2018 Spring Research Day, held Friday, June 1, 2018, at the Health Sciences Learning Center (HSLC). This year’s highlights included a keynote address from Megan Moreno, MD, MSEd, MPH, and a 27 percent increase in abstracts—for a total of 90—by faculty, fellows and residents. Of these, 55 (61%) were accepted at the Pediatric Academic Society (PAS) meeting: 44 as poster presentations, 10 as platform presentations and one as a workshop.
- Eric Post, PhD, ATC, was the speaker for the 2018 Alexander M. Iams Lectureship in Pediatric Practice, held May 10, 2018. Dr. Post is an athletic trainer at the University Health Services Athletic Training Clinic, a research assistant in the UW-Madison Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory and a lecturer in the Department of Kinesiology. His presentation, “The Who, What, and Why of Sport Specialization,” educated attendees on the prevalence, factors and injuries associated with youth sport specialization.
- As part of the Iams program, Gregory DeMuri, MD, and Emma Mohr, MD, PhD, led a facilitated American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) MOC Part 2 activity, “Pediatric Infectious Diseases Self-Assessment.”
- Raj Kapur, MD, PhD, a professor in the University of Washington Department of Pathology, spoke at the department’s annual Gilbert Barness Lectureship. The title of his presentation was, “Caring for the Patient with Hirschsprung Disease: Partnering between Surgeon and Pathologist.”
- Maria A. Stanley, MD, FAAP, served as the committee co-chair for the 2018 Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group–USA (DSMIG-USA®) Annual Symposium. This national conference, held in Dallas, Texas, brought together 110 attendees.
