Community advisory councils highlight importance of learning from lived experience in research

Waisman Center investigator Bernadette Gillick, PHD, MSPT, PT, professor in the Division of Developmental Pediatrics and Rehabilitative Medicine, and Matt Harer, MD, associate professor in the Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery, join an ever-growing cohort of investigators who have established community advisory councils as part of their research groups. Gillick and Harer established the Neonatal Family Research Advisory Council (NFRAC), funded by a Meriter Foundation Grant, as a way to use families’ perspectives to improve their research. In the council’s first year, it developed a list of best practices regarding how to approach NICU families about participating in research.
