UW Health achieves ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support – Gold Level

Dr. Michael SmaglickThe Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) recognized the UW Health ECMO Program with the ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support – Gold Level for the third consecutive designation period. This designation is valid for a three-year period starting on January 1, 2027. The ELSO Award of Excellence recognizes centers that have established processes and outcomes consistent with the highest standards of care in extracorporeal life support. At UW Health, ECMO services are provided at University Hospital in the Cardiothoracic ICU, Trauma Life Support Center, and Emergency Department, as well as at American Family Children’s Hospital in the Pediatric ICU and Emergency Department. Michael Smaglick, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Critical Care and ECMO pediatric medical director, is one of six members who make up the UW Health ECMO Program leadership team. While the team led the designation efforts, it recognizes the contributions of physicians, advanced practice providers, ECMO specialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, perfusionists, occupational and physical therapists, registry team members, and support staff who work together every day to provide exceptional care and support for patients and families facing critical illness.
