The University of Wisconsin Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Fellowship program, located in Madison, Wisconsin, is an ACGME fully accredited three year subspecialty program that provides comprehensive clinical training, a broad spectrum of research opportunities, and exceptional mentoring and education by dedicated, approachable, and knowledgeable faculty. Fellows who successfully complete this program will meet the requirements for application to the American Board of Pediatrics certifying exam in Pediatric Endocrinology.
Clinical Training
Clinical training is extremely broad in scope, and well balanced between general endocrinology and diabetes in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Patient care is concentrated at the University of Wisconsin American Family Children’s Hospital, which opened in 2007 and serves a population of over two million with over 3,500 endocrinology and 1,500 diabetes visits per year. Our Program emphasizes advanced technologies and tools for comprehensive diabetes and endocrine disorder management, and includes special exposure to Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Medical Ethics, Endocrine Oncology, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Family Lipid disorders, Pediatric Fitness, Genetics, Bone clinic, Transgender PATH clinic, Endocrine Laboratory Medicine, Adult Endocrinology, and Endocrine Disease Imaging.
Research Training
Research training is distinguished by the wide array of topic choices, genuine opportunities for fellow initiated projects, and close mentorship. The Program provides a unique two month period during the first year for research topic exploration and project preparation, workshops in Scientific Manuscript and Grant Writing, and eight months in years 2 and 3 that are dedicated to and protected for research. The program’s excellence as a research training environment is recognized by NIH T32 grant support, awarded to just a handful of Divisions of Pediatric Endocrinology in the country.
What Makes the UW Peds Endo Program Special?
Fellows at the Heart of the Division
The enthusiasm, success and happiness of our fellows serves as a motivator for enthusiasm, success and happiness of the division overall. Fellows play an active role in the division’s growth, decision-making and become a part of our family well beyond the 3 years of fellowship.
Fellow-centered Research Projects
We believe gaining experience and skills in research is best achieved by embarking on an idea that you are passionate about. With the mentoring and support of faculty members, fellows dive into the planning, grant writing and IRB application for their own research projects in the first year of training.
