- MEE: Middle Ear Effusion
- Fluid in the middle ear without reference to etiology, pathogenesis, pathology, or duration9
- OME: Otitis Media Effusion
- Fluid that is behind the middle ear that might be associated with mild inflammation
- AOM—the rapid onset of signs and symptoms of inflammation in the middle ear9,10
- Recurrent AOM—3 or more well-documented and separate AOM episodes in the preceding 6 months or 4 or more episodes in the preceding 12 months with at least 1 episode in the past 6 months11,12
- Otorrhea—discharge from the ear, originating at 1 or more of the following sites: the external auditory canal, middle ear, mastoid, inner ear, or intracranial cavity
- Otitis externa—an infection of the external auditory canal
- Tympanometry—measuring acoustic immittance (transfer of acoustic energy) of the ear as a function of ear canal air pressure13,14
