The Midwest Society for Pediatric Research (MSPR) held its 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting in Madison, Wisconsin, September 18–20. Each year, the conference highlights innovative scientific discoveries and provides a space for collaboration and career development.
The poster session, which welcomed 58 presenters, included 20 abstracts from faculty and trainees affiliated with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. Department members offered oral presentations on topics ranging from enhancing neonatal intubation with deep learning to MRI injury patterns following severe TBI.
The following is a list of oral presentations from UW scientists.
- Furkan Camci, MD, post-doctoral fellow, Cengiz Research Group and Ferrazzano Research Group, presented “MRI Injury Patterns Following Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in Children”
- Feyza Cetin, MD, post-doctoral fellow, Cengiz Research Group, presented “The Role of TrkB on SST Interneuron Survival and Function Following Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia”
- Paige Condit, MD, neonatal and perinatal medicine fellow, presented “Discovery Urinary Metabolomics of Preterm Neonatal Acute Kidney Injury”
- Cris Ebby, MD, pediatric hospital medicine fellow, presented “ChatGPT for Simplifying Admission Notes into Plain Language”
- Ryan McAdams, MD, professor, Divisions of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery and Global Pediatrics, presented a talk during the panel discussion “The State of AI in Pediatrics and Research”
- Patrick Peebles, MD, assistant professor, Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery, presented “Enhancing Neonatal Intubation with Deep Learning: Automated Identification of Airway Anatomy”
- Teresita de Jesus Valdes-Arciniega, DVM, MS, graduate student researcher, Cengiz Research Group, presented “Novel Non-invasive Technique to Identify Visual Impairments that Correlate with Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Neonates with HIE”
- Kate Walker, undergraduate researcher, Harer Research Group, presented “Differences in Simultaneous Monitoring of Right and Left Kidney Oxygenation in Preterm Neonates”
- Jingshing Wu, MD, PhD, assistant professor, Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery, presented “Mechanisms Involved in Tbx5- and Mef2c-Mediated Interventricular Septum Formation”

Two trainees from the UW Department of Pediatrics received awards at this year’s meeting.
Cris Ebby, MD, pediatric hospital medicine fellow, received the William E. Segar Award, presented annually since 2012 to a student, resident, or fellow trainee with a hypothesis-driven clinical research or behavioral/social or education project that involves innovative improvement in patient care delivery.
The William Segar Award is named in honor of William Segar, MD, a former chair of the University of Wisconsin Department of Pediatrics. Segar served as chair from 1975 to 1984. He is known for being an expert in fluid and electrolyte metabolism and pediatric fluid therapy and dialysis. He was a driving force in building the UW’s pediatric renal service.
Paige Condit, MD, neonatal and perinatal medicine fellow, received the Frederic M. Kenney Memorial Award for an outstanding research presentation by a fellow.
As the host institution, the University of Wisconsin Department of Pediatrics was deeply involved in planning the event. Pelin Cengiz, MD, professor, Division of Critical Care, and Matt Harer, MD, associate professor, Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery, led the event planning committee. Several administrative team members from the Department of Pediatrics also assisted with the event, including Gena Hughes, Alana Katz, Julie Sena, Sarah Airozo, Angie Gangstad, Erin Ryan, Andrea Miller, and Riley Fink.
The 2025 Midwest Society for Pediatric Research (MSPR) Annual Scientific Meeting will take place September 17–19 in Chicago, Illinois.
