Congratulations to Phil Farrell, MD, PhD, Co-Principal Investigator, along with Co-Investigators HuiChuan Lai, PhD, RD, and Andrew Braun, MD (Department of Medicine), who were recently awarded a subcontract from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for nearly $500,000. This 3-year Clinical Research Award, led by Principal Investigator at University of Alabama-Birmingham, Elizabeth Worthey, PhD, is entitled, “Finding and Integrating Pharma and Nutrition Linked Genomic Variation in Cystic Fibrosis (CF).” This project will build on the success of the Feeding Infants Right… from the STart (FIRST) study (led by Dr. Lai), and will extend a previous grant on Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) in CF (led by Dr. Farrell), and will include: 1) a WGS investigation of nutrition-related genetic factors associated with nutritional interventions used in children and adults with CF at both Madison and Milwaukee, WI clinical sites; and 2) identification of pharmacogenomics factors that might explain the variable responses to commonly prescribed CF drugs and orphan drug therapies, including CFTR modulators.
