Dinushan Kaluarachchi, MBBS, associate professor, Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery, has been awarded a $6,273 grant from the Cars Curing Kids Foundation for his research project, “Less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) for preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).” The length of the grant is approximately six months, extending through May 2023. The grant will be used to acquire equipment necessary to employ the LISA technique on very small premature infants in the Meriter Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with the intention of reducing RSD among premature infants at the Meriter NICU. Kaluarachchi hopes to use the new equipment to train NICU medical providers in the LISA method beginning in 2023.
