Bryan Vonasek, MD, FAAP, pediatric infectious diseases fellow, was recently selected as a 2022-2023 UJMT Fogarty Global Health Fellow at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. This one-year fellowship is funded by the Fogarty International Center within the National Institutes of Health, and it provides stipend support as well as research and travel funds. Each fellow works with a team of mentors, including at least one U.S. and one international member to monitor the trainee’s progress and provide on-site supervision. Under the mentorship of Anthony Garcia-Prats, MD, MSc, associate professor, James Conway, MD, professor and infectious diseases fellowship director, and Tisungane Mvalo, MD, assistant professor and pediatric director for UNC’s Project Malawi, Vonasek will continue his infectious diseases training on-site at Lilongwe, Malawi, studying the diagnosis of tuberculosis in children with severe acute malnutrition.
