Kelsey Lewis, PhD, honorary fellow in the Department of Pediatrics and Wittig Postdoctoral Fellow in Feminist Biology at the Center for Research on Gender and Women, along with mentor, Jennifer Rehm, MD, assistant professor, Endocrinology and Diabetes, and Madelyne Greene, PhD, RN, assistant professor of nursing, received a $9,990 Advancing Health Equity and Diversity (AHEAD) award from the Collaborative Center for Health Equity within the Institute of Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR). The one-year project titled, “Intersex prevalence and clinical response,” focuses on determining the prevalence of common variations of sex development (VSDs) in the UW Health System pediatric patient population and how these patients were managed. Unnecessary and irreversible medical interventions may be performed on babies born with intersex traits or VSDs. This study will examine whether having a multidisciplinary team that includes both an intersex adult and the parent of an intersex child will have lower rates of medically unnecessary surgeries for intersex babies and better long-term outcomes, demonstrate the need for institutional funding for a Gender and Sex Development Program, and provide rationale for a grant to establish a stakeholder engaged research program for youth who are transgender and/or intersex.
