Juan Boriosi, MD, recently received over $110,000 from Isomark, LLC, for his 1-year project, “Changes in 13C/12C delta value in breath as a biomarker of systemic inflammatory response syndrome in mechanically ventilated pediatric and adult patients.” The primary objective of this pilot study is to determine the range of exhaled breath 13C/12C delta values in humans with and without systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). If this biomarker accurately discriminates between bacterial sepsis and nonbacterial SIRS it will be extremely valuable in the diagnosis and follow-up of very seriously ill patients.
