Professional Activities

Dr. Jerome Harms is senior scientist I in the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology. Harms considers himself an immunologist because most of the research projects he has been involved in are related to immunology in some way. Harms began his research journey almost 30 years ago when he attempted to develop an assay to detect TB in Wisconsin deer herds. This led to basic research on viruses (BLV, BHV, HSV) and interactions with their host cells in vitro. This proceeded to his work with Brucellosis and host/pathogen immune interaction in the mouse model. Harms moved from the School of Veterinary Medicine to the School of Medicine and Public Health, where he is currently developing a Spondylarthrtis model in mice to study human arthritis due to chronic brucellosis. Harms has enjoyed working on all the various projects in his career and is grateful for the experience and skills he’s developed through this journey.

Research Interests

Harms is interested in host-pathogen immune response in vitro and in vivo. His research includes genetic manipulation of both host and pathogen to discern and develop practical solutions to combating disease.
