Melissa Bates, PhD, recently received a Postdoctoral Fellowship award of $90,772 over 2 years from the American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate for her project, “Intrapulmonary Shunt Pathways in Pediatric Stroke.” With Marlowe Eldridge, MD, as her sponsor, this project will look at the development of intrapulmonary shunt vessels that connect arteries and veins and bypass capillaries, during fetal life, infancy and toddlerhood. Specifically, the role that these large diameter pathways play in allowing large particles to pass the lung filter and cause stroke in children.
