Congratulations to Mei Baker, MD, for her recent award of $149,946 from the CDC Foundation entitled, “A Spinal Muscular Atrophy Newborn Screening Pilot in the Wisconsin Plain Community: Creating a Foundation for Understanding a Complex Screening Program.” This grant will allow Dr. Baker to provide information about spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and the availability of SMA newborn screening to the Plain community, implement carrier screening for SMA in newborns of consenting Plain families in conjunction with routine newborn screening for SMA in Wisconsin, and establish, for screen positive infants, a protocol for initial communications, confirmatory testing, and follow-up strategy. The goal of the program is to develop stronger ties to more remote parts of the state to improve newborn screening utilization.
