Judy Smith receives R01 renewal for Brucella study

Congratulations to Judy Smith, MD, PhD, associate professor, Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology, who will serve as Co-Investigator on a renewal subaward with Principal Investigator Sergio Oliveira, DVM, PhD, of the Federal University of Minas Gerais and Foundation for Research Development in Brazil, for their project “Brucella induces STING-mediated Guanylate-binding protein expression and unfolded protein response: Balancing bacterial elimination, inflammation and disease.” Brucella, a bacterial species that lives and replicates inside host mammalian cells, triggers both protective innate immune responses and host cell stress responses that benefit replication. The investigators are studying the competing effects of immune versus stress response activation in regulating Brucella survival. This five-year R01 grant renewal is funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the amount of $93,225.
