Speak Up for Children

The Department of Pediatrics is excited to present a day of advocacy facilitated by Jamie Poslosky. Poslosky is the Vice President of Strategic Communications at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in Washington, DC, where she brings over 15 years of experience. In this role, Jamie leads the Academy’s work to advance strategic communications initiatives, manage crises, and direct advocacy communications. Jamie also oversees the AAP’s new Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health, which serves as a centralized, trusted source of evidence and support for children and teens, parents, educators, pediatricians and other professionals who help youth navigate social media.

Advocacy 101: How to be an Effective Advocate for Children

As part of the quarterly Staff Professional Development series, participants will learn the nuts and bolts of effective advocacy techniques, how to break down complex topics to achieve advocacy goals, and how advocacy can play a role in your daily work.

  • Title: What’s New in Washington: Where We Are Now, and a Look Ahead
  • Speaker: Jamie Poslosky
  • Overview: In this keynote address, learn about the state of play for key child health policy issues in our nation’s capital, what’s on the horizon for kids in the next Congress and Administration, and of course, how pediatrician advocacy can be a powerful tool to help move these issues forward.

  • Social Media and Advocacy: Strategies for Success
    • Speaker: Maggie Cooper
    • Overview: Social media can be an effective and powerful tool when advocating for improvements in child health. This session will introduce you to institutional and organizational guidelines on social media use. You will learn about tools and resources you can use to share your voice on social media. You will leave this session with strategies that will help you find your passion, identify your audience, choose your platform, and leverage your networks.
  • Crafting Your Advocacy Message
    • Speaker: Jamie Poslosky
    • Overview: In this breakout, you will learn how to transform patient experiences into compelling advocacy stories, how to use the media to elevate advocacy goals and how to make a message resonate with policymakers.
  • Written Advocacy
    • Speakers: Vivek Balasubramaniam, MD & Alex Wolf, MD
    • Overview: This session will explore methods for advocating through writing. Examples may include op-eds, letters to the editor, blogs, or other forms of written advocacy communication.
