Preparing for a new school year can be both an exciting and nerve-racking time for students of all ages. While experiencing a range of emotions is common, it is important for the trusted adults in a student’s life — parents, guardians, teachers, and pediatricians — to know when nervousness is something more serious.
Megan Yanny, MD, assistant professor, Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, says frequent physical symptoms, avoiding school, changes in academic performance, or withdrawing from activities or friends are warning signs of anxiety.
“A big thing is making sure that your kids know that you love them no matter what and that you are a safe person for them to go to, to share their feelings and emotions,” Yanny said.
