Professional Activities

Dr. Sima Ramratnam is a board-certified pediatrician, pediatric pulmonologist, allergist, and immunologist. She is assistant professor (CHS) in the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology and the clinical director of the Pediatric Allergy clinic at UW Health Junction Road. Ramratnam first joined the Department of Pediatrics as a pediatric pulmonologist in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine. After nearly three years on the faculty as a pediatric pulmonologist and co-director for the Pediatric Advanced Asthma Clinic taking care of children with difficult to treat asthma, she desired to enhance her understanding of immune mechanisms and how allergic diseases impact the airways. Ramratnam pursued additional allergy & immunology clinical and research training at UW–Madison which was funded by a National Institutes of Health T-32 training grant. Subsequently, she joined the Division of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology as a pediatric allergist and immunologist. Since the beginning of her career, Ramratnam has been a co-investigator for several National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAD), and NIH-funded multi-center childhood asthma and allergy research networks. Ramratnam’s efforts have led to annual presentations at regional, national, and international meetings, and she has co-authored over 28 peer reviewed manuscripts. Ramratnam is also actively involved in the education of the next generation of physicians and actively participates in teaching medical students, residents, and allergy and immunology fellows.

Clinical Interests

Given her unique clinical training and experience, Ramratnam’s clinical interests are extensive, covering a broad spectrum that includes pediatric respiratory disorders and allergic conditions such as food allergy, asthma, rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis among children, as well as pulmonary function testing. Ramratnam has experience caring for children with complex medical needs and is well versed in coordination of care and working with all the members of her patients’ health care team. Ramratnam is committed to shared decision making with patients and families while providing comprehensive and evidence based clinical care.

Research Interests

As a co-investigator for the several multicenter asthma and allergy networks throughout the years, Ramratnam has developed leadership experience in the recruitment for and conduct of clinical protocols, data analysis, manuscript development, writing group participation, and scientific collaboration. Ramratnam has led research proposals evaluating environmental risk factors for childhood wheezing and asthma, especially among disadvantaged children in the United States. The current focus of Ramratnam’s research program is to reduce disparities in asthma incidence rates among children in the United States and to improve the lives of children with asthma.
