Professional Activities

Dr. Sammi Tyler is assistant professor (CHS) in the Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery. She is a passionate osteopathic pediatrician with a clinical focus on newborns, both in the newborn nursery at UnityPoint Health-Meriter and the Osher Integrative Medicine Clinic using osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). Tyler recently helped launch an OMM consult service on the postpartum unit at UnityPoint Health-Meriter in collaboration with colleagues from the Department of Family Medicine. Her academic interests focus on medical education. Tyler leads the Residents as Teacher elective and co-leads the OMM Pathway for the pediatrics residency program, teaches at both the local and national levels, and serves on the Medical Education Scholarship in Pediatrics Committee. Upon graduation from residency, she was honored to receive the American Osteopathic Foundation’s Outstanding Resident of the Year award and the Outstanding Clerkship Teaching by a Pediatric Resident award.

Clinical Interests

Tyler is deeply passionate about newborn health, with a particular focus on preventative care that supports infants in achieving a healthy, meaningful start to life. Her clinical interests include breast feeding support, early development, and integrative approaches to common newborn concerns. Tyler finds it especially fulfilling to apply OMM to support feeding, comfort, and development using her own two hands. She also enjoys having meaningful conversations with families during this critical and joy-filled period to promote wellness and resilience from the very beginning.

Research Interests

Tyler’s research interests focus on the application of OMM for common infant concerns such as feeding difficulties, plagiocephaly, and torticollis. She is also engaged in medical education scholarship, particularly regarding enhancing clinical reasoning and the integration of osteopathic principles into pediatric residency training.
