Professional Activities

Dr. Nicole Kamps is clinical assistant professor in the Division of Critical Care.

Clinical Interests

As a pediatric cardiac critical care physician, Kamps cares for critically ill neonates, children, and young adults with the full spectrum of congenital defects and acquired cardiac disease. Her clinical expertise lies in the understanding of cardiac physiology and pathophysiology that allow her to care for patients with complex heart disease. Kamps is a passionate educator and enjoys helping trainees, team members, patients, and families understand the complexity of pediatric heart disease.

Research Interests

Kamps is interested in the use of advanced technologies and high fidelity monitoring that facilitate the development of clinical decision support tools that can better care for critically ill patients with cardiac disease. Specifically, she is interested in the use of renal and splanchnic near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to help guide management of care and facilitate understanding of a patient’s physiology at the bedside.

Additionally, she is interested in investigating ways neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) ventilation can help critically ill patients with cardiac disease progress toward ventilator liberation while optimizing growth.
