Professional Activities

Dr. DeMarco Bowen is assistant professor (CHS) in the Divisions of Hospital Medicine and Complex Care and Global Pediatrics. He is a pediatric hospitalist with a strong commitment to global child health, health equity, and medical education. Bowen’s work has been recognized nationally, most notably with his selection as the recipient of the Academic Pediatric Association 2023 Ray E. Helfer Innovation in Medical Education Trainee Award. Bowen has contributed to the development of curricula on anti-racism, decolonization, and health equity in global health education and has been an invited speaker at national conferences. As the co-chair of the Midwest Consortium of Global Child Health Educators, he leads multi-institutional collaborations to advance global health training for medical professionals. His leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, along with his mentorship of medical trainees, underscores his dedication to shaping the next generation of pediatricians committed to global and community health.

Clinical Interests

Bowen’s clinical interests lie at the intersection of pediatric hospital medicine, global child health, and health equity. He is particularly focused on improving care delivery for hospitalized children in resource-limited settings both domestic and international. His work includes addressing disparities in pain management, enhancing provider communication with diverse patient populations, and integrating anti-racism and decolonization principles into pediatric care.

Research Interests

Bowen’s academic interests center on development and evaluation of curricula that equip pediatricians with the skills to address ethical dilemmas, structural inequities, and cross-cultural challenges in local and global health settings. His scholarship includes the development of components of the GHEARD curriculum, which integrates anti-racism and decolonization training into global health education.
