New Faculty Focus: Colleen Laus

Q&A with Colleen Laus, MD, assistant professor, Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

Dr. Colleen Laus

Hometown: Menasha, Wisconsin

Educational/professional background: My undergraduate degree is from UW–Madison. I earned my medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and completed my residency at the University of Minnesota.

Previous position (title, institution): I was the only pediatrician in a clinic located at the headquarters of a national corporation.

What is your field of research or area of clinical care, and how did you get into it? I got into pediatrics because I genuinely love kids. I had a great role model in my mom, who was a beloved elementary school teacher in our community.

How would you describe your work to a 5-year-old? I am the doctor who tries to help you feel better when you’re sick and tries to keep you healthy when you’re not.

What attracted you to UW–Madison? I have loved Madison ever since my undergraduate years, and it’s a dream to be a part of the university in any capacity.

What is your favorite thing to do in Madison? I love sharing a pitcher of beer with friends at the Great Dane or spending a sunny afternoon at the Memorial Union Terrace.

What’s one thing you hope trainees will learn from you and your work? I want trainees to learn that most of the time really listening to patients and families is the most important thing we do. And it’s OK to not always know the answers right away.

Do you feel your work relates to the Wisconsin Idea? If so, please describe how. Absolutely! Pediatricians play a crucial role in the overall health of the community, and we understand that supporting families goes far beyond just treating illnesses.

What are some of your hobbies and other interests? Outside of work, I am a hockey and soccer mom, so most of my time is spent at the rink or by the pitch.
