Joseph McBride, MD, MA, DTM&H, FAAP, completed the adult/pediatric infectious disease fellowship in the Department of Pediatrics from 2014-2018. After fellowship, McBride stayed in Wisconsin as an assistant professor of adult and pediatric infectious disease in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. He is medical director of the UW HIV Pediatrics and Adolescent Health Clinic and Youth HIV Primary Care Support Network in Western Wisconsin. McBride is also medical director of the Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship at UnityPoint-Meriter.
What is your favorite part of your job? The opportunities to meet all types of people, help our community, investigate the unknown, and “fight the long defeat” against germs.
What skills or knowledge did you learn through UW Pediatrics Infectious Disease Fellowship that you found most useful in your career? Learning to embrace the gray areas of medicine.
What advice would you give your fellow or trainee self? Listen more.
Are there any courses, professors, faculty members, experiences, or opportunities from your time training at UW that have had a lasting influence? I think of our faculty often. When I’m stuck, I think about Dr. Klein’s curiosity, Dr. Wald’s compassion, Dr. Conway’s energy, Dr. DeMuri’s practicality, and Dr. Henderson’s thoughtfulness.
What is your best memory from your time in Madison? Deciding to stay longer.
