Education

Medical Student Education

Highlights

  • Angela Veesenmeyer, MD, MPH, became our new third-year medical student clerkship director. She succeeded Gwen McIntosh, MD, MPH, who is now the clinical curriculum director at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Residency

Highlights

  • Simulation training continued to expand, with more residents participating in twice-monthly sessions focused on emergency medicine and urgent care. Teamwork and communication skills training were also introduced into the curriculum last year.
  • First-year residents received simulation-based Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training during orientation, and procedural training as part of a “boot camp” early in the academic year.
  • Residents were increasingly engaged in research activities last year. Of the 15 who presented at the department’s 2012 Spring Research Day, two also presented at the Pediatric Academic Society’s 2012 meeting.
  • Residency Rater for Pediatrics, a UW-developed mobile app that allows students nationwide to evaluate residency programs, was released in 2012.
  • Residency program director John Frohna, MD, MPH, received the Robert S. Holm Leadership Award from the Association of Pediatric Program Directors.
  • Our global health track continued to attract very talented and committed residents.

Graph of Graduating Residents from the Past 5 Years

Graduating Residents' Future Plans
In addition, two-thirds of residents graduating in academic year 2011-2012 entered fellowships or chief residency positions, a clear demonstration of our program’s excellence in education and research

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Highlights

  • In July, Kristin Shadman, MD, became director of pediatric continuing professional development, a new position in which she oversees continuing education, faculty development, and quality improvement training for the department. Last year, her team offered faculty development sessions on using milestones to assess pediatric residents, and academic avenues for quality improvement.
  • Continuing education event highlights included a Pediatric Advanced Life Support+ (PALS+) provider course at the UW Hospital Clinical Simulation Program, visiting professor Holmes Morton, MD (founder of the Clinic for Special Children), and a statewide summit on transitioning to adult healthcare.
  • Thanks to the efforts of medical director Michelle Kelly, MD, and many contributing faculty, the quarterly Pediatric Pathways newsletter offered physicians evidence-based articles with CME credit.
  • Under the leadership of De-Ann Pillers, MD, our bimonthly Research Lunch and Learns gave fellows and junior faculty peer-based feedback, support, and direction as they develop their research programs. In addition, our bimonthly Research Resource Series introduced them to the many research-related services available campus-wide.
