Become a Volunteer

Volunteer readers in Reach Out and Read programs transform clinic and hospital waiting rooms into literacy-rich areas for children and parents, and they help families learn the joys and the techniques of reading aloud. Readers come from all walks of life, but they have two important traits in common: a love of books and stories, and a genuine interest in helping children. Volunteers read to children, modeling book-sharing techniques for parents and showing them by example that reading aloud is fun for parent and child.

Volunteer positions are available at multiple UW Health pediatric clinics and American Family Children’s Hospital locations in Madison. Positions are available weekdays for either morning or afternoon shifts.

Prospective volunteers must be 18 or older and must complete all steps required to become a volunteer for AFCH prior to starting at a clinic or hospital. General training will be provided, as well as reading-specific training on effective techniques and strategies for approaching families and reading to children. Modeling of good techniques such as dialogic reading will be taught as well.
