SUMMARY:Family Led Academic Grand Rounds (FLAG)- Danielle Gerber & Cara Coleman
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, January 16\, 2025 \nTime: 12:00-1:00 p.m. CST in HSLC 1335 and via Zoom \nZoom Link \nTitle: Whose Expectation is it Anyway? Access\, Care and Humanization \nSpeakers: \nDanielle Gerber\, co-chair of Family Led Academic Grand Rounds\, family engagement specialist\, Department of Pediatrics\, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health \n \nCara Coleman\, co-chair of Family Led Academic Grand Rounds \n \nSession Overview:  \nLife is full of expectations — of ourselves\, others\, groups\, professions\, the law\, ethics\, morality and more. For children with disabilities\, expectations are chronically low and often fueled by lack of knowledge\, assumptions and apathy. One effective tool to combat these expectations and biases is to form partnerships between clinicians and families. Using stories from lived experience that illustrate examples of substandard care\, dehumanization and inaccessibility\, we will provide guidance on how to tackle barriers and discrimination together. \n_______________________________________________________________________ \nPlease text the 6-letter code provided in the livestream lecture to 608-260-7097 for CME credit. \nSeries Overview: The University of Wisconsin-Madison will partner with the Bluebird Way Foundation to host and produce 5 virtual Family-Led Academic Grand “FLAG” Rounds focused on Ableism in Pediatrics. These national\, quarterly educational sessions will be led and presented by families. FLAG Rounds flips the traditional model and embraces family as educators. Families will present an aspect of their “case” as a story and then offer strategies to develop knowledge\, skills and abilities to perform\, or partner in\, the essential activities of care of children with disabilities and/or medical complexity. \nTarget Audience: MD/DOs\, Nurses\, APRNs\, PAs\, Trainees including Residents\, Fellows\, Medical Students. Patients\, Caregivers\, and Community Members. \nGlobal Learning Objectives: \nAs a result of participation in this educational series\, members of the healthcare team will improve ability to: \n\nIdentify individual perceptions and biases that may inhibit the care of CYSHCN or meaningful partnership in care with children and families.\nExamine the roles of stories in communication\, relationships\, and interactions in the delivery of holistic collaborative pediatric care.\nIdentify the value of those with lived experience as teachers of medical education.\nAnalyze issues of diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and justice relevant to pediatric care.\n\n  \nAccreditation- Log into your ICEP account to view sessions\, check your credits and more!\nAccreditation Statement \n\n\n\n\nIn support of improving patient care\, the University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)\, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)\, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.\n\n\n\nCredit Designation Statements\n\n\n\nAmerican Medical Association (AMA)\n\n\nThe University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.\n\n\nAmerican Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)\n\n\nThe University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 ANCC contact hours.\n\n\nASWB Approved Continuing Education (ACE)\n\n\n \nAs a Jointly Accredited Organization\, the University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  Organizations\, not individual courses\, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1 general continuing education credits.\n\n\nContinuing Education Units\n\n\nThe University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP\, as a member of the University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA)\, authorizes this program for 0.1 continuing education units (CEUs) or 1 hours.

SUMMARY:Pediatrics Grand Rounds- Carrie Barker\, MD & Brian Williams\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, January 30\, 2025 \nTime: 7:30-8:30 a.m. CST  via Zoom \nZoom Link \nTitle: The Evolution of a Pediatric Public Health Crisis: E-cigarette or Vaping-Associated Lung Injury Before and After the Appearance of COVID-19 \nSession Overview: E-cigarettes and vaping products were first introduced in the United States around 2007\, and quickly grew in popularity. By 2014\, e-cigarettes had become the most commonly used tobacco product among youth in the United States. An e-cigarette\, or vaping\, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak was identified by the CDC in 2019\, with many cases in the adolescent population. The CDC launched a multistate investigation\, and cases reached a peak in September 2019\, shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to declining case numbers as well as scarce resources related to the pandemic\, the CDC stopped collecting data on EVALI cases in February 2020\, but e-cigarettes and vaping products continue to be the most popular tobacco product among youth. We outline the evolution of this public health crisis pre- and post-pandemic\, and discuss recommendations to facilitate prevention and management of EVALI in the pediatric population. \nSpeakers: Carrie Barker MD – assistant professor\, fellowship director\, Division of Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine\, Department of Pediatrics\, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health \n \nBrian Williams\, MD – assistant professor\, Division of Hospital Medicine & Complex Care\, Department of Pediatrics\, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health \n  \n \nPlease text the 6-letter code provided in the livestream lecture to 608-260-7097 for CME credit. \n\nSeries Overview: Pediatric Grand Rounds is a weekly multidisciplinary and interprofessional conference designed to improve a participant’s ability to practice pediatric medicine\, including patient care\, conducting healthcare research\, providing medical education\, addressing public health\, and implementing innovation. \nTarget Audience: MD/DO\, RN\, APRN\, Residents\, Fellows\, and other Trainees. \nGlobal Learning Objectives: \n\n\n\nIdentify state of the art\, evidence-based practices for prevention\, diagnosis and treatment in pediatric medicine\nAnalyze issues of diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and justice relevant to pediatric care\nCollaborate and communicate effectively with other health care professionals\, community members and families to advocate for the health care needs of children\nDescribe new scientific advances and trends in pediatric medicine that may be translatable and impact future patient care\nIdentify roles and responsibilities as part of a healthcare team that functions in value-driven\, ethical environments\n\n\nAccreditation Statement – Log into your ICEP account to view sessions\, check your credits and more! \n\n\n\n\nIn support of improving patient care\, the University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)\, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)\, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.\n\n\n\nCredit Designation Statements \nAmerican Medical Association (AMA) \nThe University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. \nAmerican Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) \nThe University of Wisconsin–Madison ICEP designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 ANCC contact hour. \nAmerican Board of Pediatrics (ABP) (for select sessions only — see individual session details) \nSuccessful completion of this CME activity\, which includes participation in the activity and individual assessment of and feedback to the learner\, enables the learner to earn up to 1 MOC points in the American Board of American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, April 10\, 2025 \nTime: 7:30-8:30 a.m. CST  via Zoom \nZoom Link \nTitle: Health Equity Rounds: Race in Clinical Algorithms – Breathing Deeper into Lung Function \nSession Overview: \nUntil recently\, standardized tools for clinical decision-making have utilized race-specific algorithms due to the widespread belief in biological differences between races. It is now recognized that many of the so-called biological effects of race are\, in fact\, the effects of environmental exposures and social and economic deprivation as a result of decades of structural inequities and racism. \nPulmonary function testing (PFT) in children plays an important role in evaluating a child with known or suspected respiratory disease. PFTs are one example of a race-based clinical algorithm. This session will critically appraise the role of race in pulmonary function testing and examine how to interpret spirometry in a race-conscious fashion. \nSpeakers: Sima Ramratnam\, MD\, MPH\, associate professor\, Division of Allergy\, Immunology\, & Rheumatology\, Department of Pediatrics\, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health \n \n  \nMary Ehlenbach\, MD\, associate professor\, director of Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion\, Division of Hospital Medicine & Complex Care\, Department of Pediatrics\, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health \n  \n \nPlease text the 6-letter code provided in the livestream lecture to 608-260-7097 for CME credit. DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, May 1\, 2025 \nTime: 7:30-8:30 a.m. CST in HSLC 1345 and  via Zoom \nZoom Link \nTitle: Iams-Tuffli Lecture: Building on the Strengths of Youth Who Have Endured Hardships \nSession Overview:  \nThis talk will discuss the three foundational frameworks that prepare us to develop young people capable of thriving through good and difficult times – positive youth development\, resilience\, and trauma-sensitive care. It will cover the proven effects of childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences on the brain\, body\, and behavior throughout the lifetime.  Critically\, it will speak of the power of human relationships to heal. \nIt will then introduce the essentials of delivering trauma-sensitive care and offer a few strategies to APPLY these principles in our work with children and youth. It will focus on the power of well-boundaried human connection in healing as well as the imperative of restoring a sense of control back to people who have been traumatized. \nFinally\, we will discuss the type of open\, trusting\, strength-based communication that positions us to reach teenagers and young adults. Then the resilience model will be discussed in the context of adolescent behavioral change.  All youth possess strengths and their behavior is changed only when those strengths are recognized and built upon. \nSpeaker: Kenneth R. SUMMARY:Pediatrics Grand Rounds - Lovefest: Senior Resident Recognition and Residency Awards
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, June 5\, 2025 \nTime: 7:30-8:30 a.m. CST  in HSLC 1345 and via Zoom \nZoom Link \nTitle: Lovefest: Senior Resident Recognition and Residency Awards \nSession Overview: Please join us for the 2nd  annual Senior Resident Lovefest at the usual time of Pediatric Grand Rounds on Thursday\, June 5th in person in HSLC 1345 or online. We will celebrate the graduating class with brief comments from the program about each resident\, a presentation of annual education awards to residents\, fellows\, and faculty\, and a tribute made by the senior class. We recognize that it is often challenging for faculty to attend the formal graduation banquet after hours and wanted faculty and residents to have a space for celebration and recognition during work hours. Senior residents are excused from clinical duties to attend the session and we hope that many faculty are able to join to help us celebrate. We’re very excited about this lead-in to the formal graduation banquet and are looking forward seeing many of you there! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n\n\n
