Independent Reading & Research Electives

The independent research elective is available for students with a special interest in completing a research project in pediatrics. This course may be taken for a minimum of 2 weeks or a maximum of 8 weeks. Students are expected to identify a pediatric faculty member to serve as project advisor. Health Services and Behavioral Health Research Electives

The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to offer research electives in the areas of health services and behavioral health. Students choosing this elective can shape their own research experience, choosing to participate in collecting data, submitting IRB protocols, preparing abstracts for submission to national and international research conferences, writing manuscripts for publication, designing research methodologies, or applying research methods to available data, in a relaxed and fun environment. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a number of pediatric and health services research conferences including informal lunches where original research is presented for feedback and discussion. Preference is given to 8+ week elective experiences, but 4 week electives can be arranged. No prior research experience is required.

Health Services Research Focus

Dr. Elizabeth Cox directs the Program of Research on Outcomes for Kids (PROKids), examining topics such as access to care, quality of care and health outcomes for children. Current research projects study child and parent roles in healthcare decision-making, the impact of race/ethnicity on the quality of pediatric care, and the relationship between health literacy and effective healthcare decision making. Students will interact with health services researchers from other UWSMPH departments such as family medicine, internal medicine, surgery, oncology and population health sciences as well as faculty across campus (i.e. Nursing, Pharmacy, Sociology, Communication, Education, and Engineering).
