Education

Medical Student Education

Highlights

  • Fourth-year UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) students selected Daniel Sklansky, MD, for a Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association 2016 Clinical Science Teaching Award. The award is given each year to a clinical science teacher from Madison, La Crosse, Marshfield, and Milwaukee in recognition for dedicated commitment to teaching excellence.

  • Department faculty developed two new electives for medical students interested in pediatrics: Pediatric Nephrology (Michael Semanik, MD, MS) and Pediatric Gastroenterology (Daniel O’Connell, MD)

  • Department faculty continued to play key roles in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health’s curriculum transformation.

Residency

Highlights

  • The program improved residents’ continuity clinic experience through optimized scheduling, data collection and feedback—and by piloting a designated resident patient panel at one clinic.

  • Residents in the department’s global health track are now participating in a formalized community-based health experience in partnership with Centro Hispano of Dane County and Access Community Health Centers. They will help train community health workers to lead a postpartum support group program for Latino mothers and infants, and evaluate the extent to which it influences maternal and infant weight, breastfeeding rates, and maternal mental health. The project is funded by a Wisconsin Partnership Program Community Opportunity Grant (academic partners: Sabrina Butteris, MD; Ryan Coller, MD, MPH; Sarah Webber, MD).

  • Laura Houser, MD, now leads the residency program’s community pediatrics and advocacy experience (CPAX). This four-week rotation gives all first-year residents experience at a federally qualified health center and provides them with dedicated time to engage with local organizations to develop an advocacy project.

  • In 2016, board scores for the graduating class of residents were in the top 10 among pediatric residency programs in the U.S. For the last two years, the department has had a board pass rate of 100%.

  • Residency Program Director John Frohna, MD, MPH, received the 2016 Medicine-Pediatrics Program Directors Associate (MPPDA) Leadership Award, a new award given to a physician who has made significant contribution to Medicine-Pediatrics (Med-Peds) as a profession.

  • Associate Residency Program Director Daniel Sklansky, MD, was selected to participate in a nationally-recognized leadership development program: the Association of Pediatric Program Directors’ Leadership in Educational Academic Development.

  • Christina (Beaird) Barreda, MD, a 2016 residency graduate who is currently a fellow, received a two-year, $127,500 fellowship from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to support advanced training through the department’s pulmonology fellowship.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Highlights

  • Approximately 140 primary care physicians, nurses, and physician assistants attended the 2016 Seminars in Pediatrics to learn about current trends in pediatric research and clinical practice. This year’s focus was on adolescent medicine; Paula Cody, MD, and Kristin Shadman, MD, served as course directors.

Keynote speaker Mark Halstead, MD—team physician for the St. Louis Blues and Washington University Athletics, and medical director for the St. Louis Children's Hospital Young Athlete Center and Sports Concussion Clinic—gave two presentations: one on sports-related concussions in children and adolescents and one on common lower extremity overuse sports injuries in adolescents.

Two pre-conferences were also held prior to Seminars:

    • “2016 Pediatric Gastroenterology Self-Assessment,” an American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) MOC Part 2 Activity (facilitated by Daniel O’Connell, MD)

    • Nexplanon (long-acting reversible contraceptive implant) training

  • The Department of Pediatrics hosted the 2016 Midwest Pediatric Cardiology Society Annual Meeting. This event, co-chaired by J. Carter Ralphe, MD, and Nicholas Von Bergen, MD, brought together more than 150 physicians, fellows, residents, medical students and researchers.

  • Maria A. Stanley, MD, FAAP, served as the committee co-chair for the 2016 Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group–USA (DSMIG-USA®) Annual Symposium. This national conference, held in Orlando, Florida, brought together over 130 attendees.

  • Christine Seroogy, MD, and Jessica Scott-Schwoerer, MD, served on the planning committee for Practical Approaches to Inherited Disease in the Plain Communities in Wisconsin, a conference held in LaFarge, Wisconsin, in collaboration with Vernon Memorial Healthcare and the LaFarge Medical Clinic.

  • Michael Kim, MD, and Alicia Plummer, MD, facilitated the Iams lectureship ABP MOC Part 2 Activity, “Emergency Medicine.”

  • The department added two new regularly scheduled series (RSS)—the Collaborative Genomics Conference and the Wiley Seminar Series—bringing the total RSS’s in our department to nine.
