Education

Medical Student Education

Highlights

  • In May 2014, Kirstin Nackers, MD, became the department’s director of medical student education, succeeding Angela Veesenmeyer, MD.

Residency

Highlights

  • We expanded our global health track to include more faculty mentors and residents, including residents from other specialties, such as family medicine, ob/gyn and emergency medicine. In addition to mentoring pediatrics residents as they participated in elective rotations in Uganda, Ethiopia and Ecuador, we created and disseminated a simulation-based curriculum to prepare residents for global health rotations.
  • The rural rotation we established in 2013 is thriving: graduate Samantha Schulz, MD, was the first resident to complete the eight-week experience. Two residents will be completing the program this academic year, and one more will complete it next academic year.
  • Residents presented 19 abstracts at the department’s 2014 Spring Research Day. Of these, two were presented at the Pediatric Academic Society (PAS) national meeting, one was presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) national meeting, and one was presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Medical Specialties national meetings.
  • Individual resident accomplishments included:
    • Resident Assad Beshish, MBBCh, was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Society (AOA).
    • Resident Eliza Blanchette, MD, received an American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Resident Research grant for a project to identify meaningful outcomes for youth with Type 1 diabetes and their families.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Highlights

  • Nearly 155 primary care physicians, nurses, and physician assistants attended the 2014 Seminars in Pediatrics, which the department held in tandem with the Midwest Clinical Genetics Conference. Both events focused on clinical genetics and featured national speaker Marc Williams, MD, FAAP, FACMG, director of the Genomic Medicine Institute at Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pennsylvania.
  • Two national speakers joined Barbara Knox, MD, medical director of the UW Health Child Protection Program, for the Cultural Context of Corporal Punishment Conference. The event focused on the impact of corporal punishment on child development through discussions of research, history and culture, and individual bias.
