Division Highlights - Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology

The Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology provides state-of-the-art, evidence-based care for children with asthma, allergies, immunologic disorders and rheumatologic diseases.

Our basic and clinical research projects are designed to better understand and find more effective treatments for these diseases.

2014 Highlights

  • James Gern, MD, is a co-PI on a new seven-year, $70 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) grant that continues work on the Inner-City Asthma Consortium (ICAC). Dr. Gern, along with William Busse, MD, co-directs ICAC, a nationwide clinical research network that leads research and seeks new immune-based treatments for asthma in inner-city children.
  • Christopher Healy, MD, received a 2014 UW Health Patient Experience Champion Award, which recognizes Avatar survey scores that are in the top 5% of all UW Health physicians.
  • Anna Huttenlocher, MD, received the Arthritis Foundation of Dane County’s Community Impact Leadership Award for her work in juvenile arthritis, experience in the field of pediatric rheumatology and emphasis on giving back to the community.
  • Kathleen Shanovich, RN, MS, CPNP, received a UW Health Advance Practice Provider Excellence in Clinical Practice Award. The award recognizes UW Health nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and physician assistants who demonstrate outstanding clinical practice, teaching and leadership.
