Division Highlights - General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine

The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine provides outstanding outpatient care for children—24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Our research focuses on family-centered care, quality improvement, and systems redesign.

2013 Highlights

  • Eight GPAM faculty (Timothy Chybowski, MD; M. Bruce Edmonson, MD, MPH; Julie Gocey, MD; Karen Hillery, MD; Katie Kelley, MD; Thomas Meier, MD; Karen Pletta, MD; Jeffrey Sleeth, MD) were in the top five percent of UW Health providers for 2012 Avatar patient satisfaction survey results.
  • David Bernhardt, MD, was selected to serve on the School of Medicine and Public Health’s (SMPH) Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) for 2013-2014.
  • Elizabeth Cox, MD, PhD, received a three-year, $2 million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to implement and evaluate a patient-centered approach to improving outcomes for children with Type I diabetes. She was also appointed to PCORI's newly established multi-stakeholder Advisory Panel on Improving Healthcare Systems.
Her team also received a UW Institute for Clinical and Translational (UW-ICTR) Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) award for their project, “Engaging Stakeholders to Deliver Family-Centered Diabetes Self-Management Resources.”
In addition, her team’s Children’s Hospital Safety Climate (CHSC) Questionnaire is featured in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Health Care Innovations Exchange.
Finally, “Development and Validation of PRISM: A Survey Tool to Identify Diabetes Self-Management Barriers," a research project by Dr. Cox (with collaborators M. Tracy Bekx, MD; Ellen Connor, MD; Michael MacDonald, MD; and Beth Van Den Langenberg, NP) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin intern Katie Fritz, MD, MPH, was selected for presentation at the Pediatric Endocrine Society's Presidential Reception.
  • Clara Ye, an undergraduate student mentored by Elizabeth Cox, MD, PhD, received a 2013-2014 Wisconsin Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowship for her project “Finding the Answers for an Effective Online Peer Support Intervention—From the Perspective of Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.”
  • Kathleen DeSantes, MD, was awarded approximately $27,000 from the Wisconsin Rural Physician Residency Assistance Program (WRPRAP) to create an elective rural medical rotation for pediatric residents.
  • Lindsay Geier, MD, received the department’s 2013 Outstanding General Pediatrician Award.
  • Steven Koslov, MD, stepped down as GPAM clinical director after four years in that role. During his tenure, he led many primary care redesign initiatives that have been instrumental in our progress as an Accountable Care Organization.
  • Gwen McIntosh, MD, MPH, was appointed the School of Medicine and Public Health’s assistant dean for students.
  • Dipesh Navsaria, MPH, MSLIS, MD, collaborated with the Wisconsin chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to receive a Wisconsin Partnership Program small-scale implementation grant, “ACTIVATE: Advocacy for Children — Transformational Impact Via Action and Teamwork for Engagement.”
He also appeared on Alaska Public Radio's Line One: Your Health Connection to discuss the effects of reading and stress on early childhood brain development, participated in a congressional briefing on the benefits of the Reach Out and Read program, and served on the Academic Pediatric Association’s Childhood Poverty Task Force.
Finally, he was one of two lecturers chosen for the Appleton Education Foundation’s 2013 Community Education Program, and was named to lead the advocacy training thread of the SMPH’s “Transforming Medical Education 2.0” grant.
