Division Highlights - Critical Care

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine delivers comprehensive, state-of-the-art care to critically ill children admitted to American Family Children’s Hospital.

Our scholarly endeavors include advocacy, medical education, clinical and basic science research, and global health.

2012 Highlights

  • For the first time, the AFCH pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) had over 1000 patients during FY12.
  • Tom Brazelton, MD, MPH, became medical director for UW Health’s emerging telehealth program.
  • Juan Boriosi, MD, received the James Sutherland Award at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research. The award recognizes an outstanding abstract presentation by a junior faculty member.
  • Marlowe Eldridge, MD, received a 5-year, $3.13 million grant from the National Institutes of Health – National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute for his project, “Right Heart-Pulmonary Vascular Interactions in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.”
  • Peter Ferrazzano, MD, received the Young Investigator Travel Award from the Hershey Conference on Developmental Brain Injury in London for his abstract, “Age-Dependent Differences in Microglial Responses to Hypoxia-Ischemia.”
  • Gregory Hollmann, MD, received the first annual Joseph P. Cravero Leadership Award by the Society for Pediatric Sedation, and was inducted into the Wisconsin Teaching Academy.
  • Tricia Smith, PNP, received the best abstract (non-physician category) award at the Society for Pediatric Sedation Conference for “Oral Midazolam Premedication Reduces Propofol Induction Doses and Infusion Rates for Pediatric MRI.”
  • Michael Wilhelm, MD, received the department’s Varness Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award.
