Division Highlights - Infectious Diseases

The Division of Infectious Diseases cares for children with common, complex, or potentially life-threatening infectious diseases and illnesses.

Research interests include international health, immunization efficacy, vaccine preventable disease epidemiology and policy, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and fungal infections.

2011 Highlights

  • James Conway, MD, was appointed associate director for health science at the newly established UW-Madison Global Health Institute.
  • Greg DeMuri, MD, received a $15,000 research and development award from the Department of Pediatrics for a pilot project, “Gene Expression in the Carrier State of Group A Streptococci.”
  • Bruce Klein, MD, received a Hilldale Award, UW-Madison’s top honor for faculty, for his research contributions in the field of medical mycology (the study of fungi that are pathogenic for humans).  He also received $108,146 from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation’s (WARF) Accelerator Program to facilitate work on anti-fungal drug development.
  • Ellen Wald, MD, received a five-year, $3.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health – National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for her project, "Sinusitis in Children and the Nasopharyngeal Microbiome."
  • Marcel Wüethrich, PhD, a senior scientist in the laboratory of Bruce Klein, MD, received a five-year, $2.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health – National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for his project, "Regulation of Vaccine-Induced Anti-Fungal T17 Cells.”
