Division Highlights - Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology

The Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology provides state-of-the-art, evidence-based care for children with asthma, allergies, and rheumatologic diseases.

Our basic and clinical research projects are designed to better understand and find more effective treatments for these diseases.

2010 Highlights

  • Yury Bochkov, PhD, and James Gern, MD, developed the first system for culturing the newly discovered “C species” of rhinoviruses.
  • The Wisconsin Allergy Research Training (WiscART) program, led by James Gern, MD, was renewed for its third five-year cycle.
  • Daniel Jackson, MD, joined the division in June 2010. He also received a KL2 Scholar Award from the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research to investigate interactions between allergic sensitization and viral respiratory tract infections, and how those interactions influence childhood asthma.
  • Robert F. Lemanske, Jr., MD, was the lead author of a New England Journal of Medicine article evaluating the best step-up therapy in children whose asthma is not well controlled on low-dose inhaled corticosteroids.
  • Christine Seroogy, MD, received a $50,000 grant from the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research for her project, “T Regulatory Cells and Childhood Asthma.” She was also invited to discuss the diagnosis and treatment challenges of newborn screening for severe combined immunodeficiency at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
