The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine delivers state-of-the-art, comprehensive, and coordinated medical care to critically ill children admitted to American Family Children’s Hospital. We also provide comfort measures for children undergoing sedation for diagnostic, imaging, or therapeutic procedures.

Our faculty’s scholarly endeavors include advocacy, medical education, clinical and basic science research, and global health. Our research is well supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense and the US Navy, the American Heart Association, among others.

Research activities include:

  • A randomized, multicenter phase III trial testing the efficacy and safety of dexmedetomidine in mechanically ventilated pediatric patients;
  • A pending multicenter trial to determine the association between key coagulation genes and prognosis in pediatric patients with acute lung injury;
  • High-resolution MRI to identify biomarkers of injury and therapeutic effect in animal models of pediatric cerebral ischemia;
  • Collaborative development of a pediatric brain injury database that will correlate inpatient clinical data with follow-up neurodevelopmental assessments performed at the Waisman Center; and
  • Integrative cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology in isolated heart-lung preparations and non-anesthetized animals and humans, with specific applications to the effects of exercise, acute hypoxia, altitude, hyperbaria, and environmental exposure.
